Using Skype

Here are two examples of classrooms using Skype to enhance their instruction. I found both on youtube.com, which I downloaded and converted with onlinevideoconverter.com.

Skyping with a class in Venezuela

Skyping with an author/artist

What do you think about what these classrooms are doing? What can you do?

  1. We feel like the first video was not a very effective activity to do with the class. There are better exercises to execute than this. The second video on the other hand, would be a good activity to do with students, especially if they enjoyed a certain book and wanted to talk with the author. It is definitely easier to set up a skype interview with the author rather than having them come into the classroom, particularly if they live across the country. J.H, A.B.

  2. We will consider using Skype in the classroom. We think it could be a great resource for connecting students with cultures they are studying, with authors they are reading about, and with peers across the world.

  4. You could encourage guest appearances for any subject. Important community members who may not have the time to physically join the class would be able to have interactive communication with your students.

Electronic pen-pals could give cultural and social framework for language learning.

  5. We thought that using Skype and video chatting was a great idea. We can totally see ourselves using in in our classrooms by making connections in our community as well as the global community.

We plan to talk to use it to talk to professionals (artist, authors, etc) for advice and help, talking to kids at home that are sick, showing parents what is happening in the classroom, and talking to other schools and students. The list does not end!

  7. A great way to expand communication and learning! It can also be a very hands-on experience for the students. Don't forget, the camera can be portable!!!
